A legendary Sauternes vintage in its finest form. Filhot's Creme de Tete is a selection of the estate's most botrytis-rich lots, made only in exceptional years, and 1990 was as exceptional as they come: a hot, dry summer drove concentration ranked among the greatest Sauternes vintages of the modern era. Filhot is a Deuxieme Cru Classe of the 1855 classification and one of the largest estates in the appellation, and this Semillon-based cuvee, filled out with Sauvignon Blanc and a touch of Muscadelle, marked the debut of its top bottling. Now amber and fully mature, it shows candied apricot, honey, and quince with the acidity to keep going. Privately sourced and rare.

More about Chateau Filhot

Château Filhot is one of the great country estates of Sauternes: a grand château set in an English-style landscape park, on a property where only a small share is planted to vines. Its Sauternes leans toward freshness rather than sheer weight.

The vineyard dates back to the 1630s, and Romain de Filhot completed the château in 1709. After the Revolution the estate passed to the Lur-Saluces family, the owners of Yquem, who added the neighboring Pineau du Rey vineyard. In 1935 it was bought by the Comtesse Durieu de Lacarelle, sister of the Marquis de Lur-Saluces, and it has stayed a family affair ever since: Count Henri de Vaucelles took over in 1974, and his son Gabriel now runs the property.

About 60 hectares of vines lie in one large block on slopes above the village of Sauternes, on a mix of gravel, sand, clay and limestone. Pickers make several passes for botrytized berries. Sémillon leads, but Sauvignon Blanc plays an unusually large part, with a little Muscadelle, and the wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged partly in oak. The result is a lively, apricot-and-citrus style of Sauternes that ages gracefully. In great years the estate also bottles a richer selection, the Crème de Tête.
