The Niederberg Helden vineyard—its name referencing medieval wine trading guilds—represents Schloss Lieser's commitment to traditional Mosel vineyard designation. Located on steep south-facing slopes with primary slate, the vineyard captures Mosel's finest terroir expression. The Riesling Grosses Gewächs (Grand Cru dry) indicates wines at the estate's highest quality and alcohol level. At two years old, this 2023 vintage shows the kind of focus and mineral intensity that comes from Mosel's greatest slate vineyards. Schloss Lieser's traditional approach—hand-harvesting, spontaneous fermentation—preserves the clarity and precision that defines benchmark German Riesling.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Riesling Lieserer Niederberg Helden Grosses Gewächs is exquisitely subtle on the nose, with a slightly smoky evocation of wet slate. The smooth palate is wonderfully stony, putting its slatiness deliciously ahead of fruit and is beautifully linear with ripe, straight-laced acidity. This totally clean-cut wine rings long with its slate savor." —Anne Krebiehl MW

More about Schloss Lieser

Schloss Lieser is a 175-year-old Neo-Renaissance castle on the Mosel where Thomas Haag has quietly become one of Germany's greatest Riesling makers. Spontaneous fermentations with natural yeasts, half stainless steel and half traditional barrels, minimal intervention. They farm Grand Cru slopes and make wines that taste like specific places—Lieserer Niederberg Helden, Brauneberger Juffer. This is Mosel Riesling done the difficult, rewarding way.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
