Every bottling of Dehours' Grande Réserve carries a little of every vintage back to 1998. That's the year the family started a perpetual reserve, and each year the reserve makes up 30 to 50 percent of the blend, alongside wine from the newest harvest, so the cuvée gains one more year of depth with every release. The other big choice is the grape. Jérôme Dehours got control of the family estate back in 1996 (after his father's sudden death, a financial group had run the farming for nearly a decade) and built it on Pinot Meunier, a grape often dismissed as Champagne's second-string variety. He calls it the defining grape of the Vallée de la Marne and of his own vineyards, and the flagship Grande Réserve is mostly Meunier, from parcels in Mareuil-le-Port, Oeuilly and Troissy on the south side of the Marne River. Jérôme also helped found Les Artisans du Champagne, a group of growers that promotes serious grower Champagne. This is the real thing from a family grower, in a 375ml that's right for two glasses, or for a Tuesday that needs some bubbles.

More about Dehours et Fils

Four generations of Dehours winemakers working in Vallée de la Marne, now with Jérôme Dehours in charge. Fourteen hectares split across 42 different parcels in Mareuil-le-Port, Oeuilly, and Troissy, each with different sun-exposure, soil, vines, height, age. This terroir complexity shows in the glass immediately. These Champagnes taste like the work of someone who knows every corner of their land. Not house style. Vineyard expression.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Warm gougères, buttermilk fried chicken, salmon rillettes on toast, roast chicken with mushrooms, aged Comté, or popcorn with brown butter.

Tasting Profile

A generous, fruit-forward style of Champagne. It's dry and medium-bodied, and full malolactic fermentation gives it a rounder feel.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
