Bernhard Ott is one of Austria's acknowledged masters of Gruner Veltliner, and 'Am Berg' is the wine that shows why his whole range is worth chasing. It's the entry point to his lineup, but there's nothing entry-level about the farming: the Ott family has worked the Wagram, northwest of Vienna, since the 1880s, and Bernhard converted the estate to biodynamics years ago. The grapes come from the region's deep loess soils, which give Gruner its signature mix of freshness and gentle spice. Fermentation happens in stainless steel with native yeasts, and the wine rests on its fine lees through the winter before bottling. 2025 was a cool, damp year in Lower Austria that demanded patience through a rainy autumn, and it has left the Gruners leaner and more nervy than usual, with lower alcohol and more cut. Exactly the kind of Gruner you want by the case.

More about Bernhard Ott

Bernhard Ott took over his family's Wagram estate in 1993, at 21, the fourth generation of a winemaking family dating to 1889. He started composting in 2004, and a 2006 tasting with Aubert de Villaine at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti convinced him to go fully biodynamic; the estate is now certified. In 2007 he co-founded respekt with Johannes Hirsch and Fred Loimer. Thanks to all that compost he doesn't irrigate. Rosenberg and Spiegel are the stars, while Am Berg and Der Ott are terrific Grüner values.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

A natural with schnitzel, roast chicken, and salads with vinaigrette. Its cut and lift also make it a great match for spicy Thai or Vietnamese dishes and steamed shellfish.

Tasting Profile

Dry, light-bodied, and crisp, with green apple, citrus, and a hint of white pepper. Zippy acidity and a clean, refreshing finish.
