The name comes straight out of the ground: "moon dust" is what growers call the pale, fine Goldridge sand of the Sebastopol Hills, the coolest, foggiest far corner of the Russian River Valley. Harper's Rest is a brand-new California venture from the Underwood family, farming two estate vineyards devoted only to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Moon Dust block was first planted back in 1996, and it's now worked regeneratively and organically, then vinified with a hands-off touch: native ferments, no additives, fourteen months in French oak resting on its lees. This is a debut release, and it arrives with the kind of cool-site tension that makes coastal Sonoma Chardonnay worth chasing.

"The 2023 Chardonnay Moon Dust Vineyard is beautifully focused in the glass. Lemon peel, white flowers, chalk, mint and slate lend tons of energy. This gracious, mid-weight Chardonnay impresses with its crystalline energy and focus, qualities that build nicely with time in the glass." —Antonio Galloni

More about Harper's Rest

Harper's Rest is a small Russian River Valley estate devoted to just two grapes, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Its calling card is the Moon Dust Vineyard, a cool, foggy site in the Sebastopol Hills named for its fine, sandy Goldridge soil (the 'moon dust').

The project belongs to Chris Underwood, a fifth-generation member of the family behind Young's Market Company, founded in California in 1888. The home estate is 36 acres on Westside Road in Healdsburg's Middle Reach. It's named for Reuben Harper, a hops farmer who worked the land in the 1850s and is buried under a bay laurel now surrounded by vines. The family bought Moon Dust, 18 acres with Chardonnay vines dating to 1996, in 2021. It is certified organic and Regenerative Organic Certified, and the home estate is farmed the same way.

The cellar is hands-off: native-yeast fermentations and long aging on the lees in French oak. Look for cool-climate tension and lift rather than weight.
