Taittinger, Champagne Brut Comtes de Champagne, 2002

Comtes de Champagne is Taittinger's flagship, made only in standout vintages and only from 100% Chardonnay off the Grand Cru chalk of the Cote des Blancs (Avize, Cramant, Chouilly, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger). Just the first-press juice goes in, a small fraction sees new oak, and the wine then rests close to a decade on its lees in Taittinger's Gallo-Roman chalk cellars beneath Reims. The 2002 is a celebrated, structured vintage now showing the toasty, honeyed depth that long aging brings, while still carrying that laser of Chardonnay acidity. This is prestige Blanc de Blancs at full maturity. Decant lightly and serve in proper glasses, not flutes.

More about Taittinger

Founded in 1734, Taittinger is one of the few remaining family-run Champagne houses, now run by great-grandchildren Vitalie and Clovis. Third-largest vineyard owner in Champagne, they plant 48% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Meunier. The Comtes de Champagne is all-Chardonnay magic.

Oysters, caviar, lobster, roast turbot, or aged hard cheeses. Equally a showpiece aperitif.

Lemon and white flowers deepening into brioche, toasted nuts and honey with age. Full but precise, with vivid Chardonnay acidity and a long, chalky, mineral finish.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
