In the hills above Lucca, in the often-overlooked Colline Lucchesi appellation of northwestern Tuscany, Tenuta di Valgiano farms biodynamically and works largely by hand. Palistorti is their more approachable bottling, a blend led by Sangiovese with Merlot, Syrah, Ciliegiolo and Canaiolo grown at around 300 meters of elevation. Certified organic in 1996 and biodynamic in 2002, the estate prizes composting, cover crops and biodiversity over any recipe. The result is a fresh, savory, food-friendly Tuscan red with real sense of place and none of the bombast.

"The 2023 Palistorti di Valgiano is a soft, fruity red to drink now and over the next few years. Succulent red cherry fruit, sweet spice and lifted floral notes are nicely pushed forward in this easygoing offering."

More about Tenuta di Valgiano Palistorti di Valgiano

Lucca isn't the first place most people look for great Tuscan wine, and that's exactly why Tenuta di Valgiano is such a pleasure to discover. In the hills above the walled city, in the little-known Colline Lucchesi appellation of northwestern Tuscany, this estate has become one of Italy's most respected biodynamic farms. Palistorti is its everyday line, the easiest way into the house style.

Laura di Collobiano and Moreno Petrini have run Valgiano since 1992, working with viticulturist and winemaker Saverio Petrilli. They converted to organic farming in the 1990s and to biodynamics in 2002, and they are Demeter certified. The vineyards face south on chalky, clay-rich alberese marl and sandstone washed down from the hills behind the estate. Nearly 200 acres of woodland surround the vines, and the estate also produces olive oil and honey. Valgiano thinks of itself as a whole farm rather than just a winery.

In the cellar, things stay simple. The reds are hand-harvested and destemmed, fermented with native yeasts in small open-top wooden vats and foot-trodden, then aged in older French oak and cement. The Palistorti Rosso is led by Sangiovese, with Merlot, Syrah and a little Canaiolo and Ciliegiolo. The Bianco blends Vermentino, Trebbiano, Malvasia and Grechetto. Both are fresh, savory, food-friendly Tuscan wines that show their place without any bombast.
