Eight hectares of Cannonau on granite in Mamoiada, divided into four parcels the Sardinians call ghiradas — and this is the bottling from Ocruarana, meaning "frog's eye," named for the green metamorphic stones (called 'ocruarana' in Sardinian) that turn up in the soil among the granite. Teularju is the project of Francesco Sedilesu and family (you'll recognize the Sedilesu name from Mamoiada's wider Cannonau renaissance), and these are old-school, terroir-driven Sardinian reds: native-yeast fermentation, twelve days on the skins in small wood, then malo and a year of aging in large 30- and 50-hectoliter oak casks. The 2022 is deep and complex, with balsamic cherry, lavender, and sweet spice; mineral and elegant for a wine of this latitude.

"The 2022 Ghirada Ocruarana opens slowly in the glass, dusty and hauntingly dark, with a whiff of dried flowers and underbrush giving way to notes of blackcurrant and sage. This is seamlessly silky yet lifted in feel, with a wave of ripe strawberry fruits complicated by a tinge of cedar as violet inner florals amass towards the close. Francesco Sedilesu and his three sons made a deliberate choice in 2017: plant eight hectares of pure Cannonau in Mamoiada, central Sardinia, and make wine that tastes like four different villages in the same vineyard. Each of their four Ghiradas—Ocruarana, Caragonare, Erula, Rizza—expresses the nuance of exposure, drainage, and soil. Organic farming, spontaneous fermentation, no filter: wines that taste like they walked straight out of Sardinian stone.
