The French oak is the whole point here: after maturing in traditional American oak, a portion of this 15-year-old Speyside malt is finished in Limousin French oak casks, which add delicate spice and a creamy, velvety texture without steamrolling the distillery's fruity house style. That's a genuinely unusual finish for a core-range single malt, and it's what makes this bottle taste like more than its age statement suggests. The distillery sits in the Livet Valley, drawing its water from Josie's Well, a natural spring fed by the River Livet — the "smooth flowing one" that gives The Glenlivet its name. George Smith took the first legal distilling licence in the parish in 1824 after learning the craft illicitly, and carried a pair of flintlock pistols at all times to protect himself from the smugglers around him. His youngest son later won the right to the definite article in 1884, which is why every other Glenlivet is just a Glenlivet and this one is The. A smooth, nutty, gently spiced malt that makes an easy case for itself neat.

Sip it neat or with a drop of water. If you want food: a wedge of aged Mimolette or Comté, salted almonds and dried mango, dark chocolate truffles, sticky toffee pudding, or a slice of ginger cake. It also stands up nicely to a good cigar.

Tasting Profile

Deep gold in the glass. The nose leads with rich toffee, then dark chocolate and a ginger-spiced biscuit note. The palate is fruity and nutty — ripe mango, warming cinnamon, almond — with a creamy, velvety texture from the French oak finish. The finish is warm, mellow and gently spiced.
