Magnum of La Vigne Cendrée — "The Ashen Vine" — Boudignon's south-facing, half-hectare Chenin Blanc parcel high above Château de Varennes. Planted via massal selection in 2015 on grey schist, rhyolite and clayey silt, this is the cuvée where his ambition reads loudest: full southern exposure plus a clay component give the wine real power on top of Savennières chalk and salt. The 2023 in 1.5L shows ripe orchard fruit, beeswax, white pepper and crushed rock, all wrapped around a long mineral spine. Magnum format slows the evolution — this is a wine you can confidently rest for a decade or more.

More about Thibaud Boudignon

Thibaud Boudignon makes some of the most electric dry Chenin Blanc in the Loire: Savennières and Anjou Blanc that taste less of honey and ripe fruit than of salt, citrus and schist.

Boudignon grew up partly in Bordeaux and wanted to be an Olympic judo champion. When that didn't pan out, he went to work in vineyards and cellars, in the South of France, in Bordeaux, in Australia and in Gevrey-Chambertin, before arriving at Château Soucherie in Savennières in 2007. In 2009 he began making wine under his own name, starting with bought grapes and an Anjou Blanc named for his mother, Françoise, and his grandfather, François. His centerpiece is the Clos de la Hutte, a walled former abbey site in La Possonnière, which he bought and replanted with massale selections of old-vine Chenin, some from Domaine Huet.

The farming is biodynamic and close to obsessive; the soils are thin clay over the fractured dark schist locals call Anjou Noir. He presses whole clusters, ferments with native yeasts in old barrels and concrete, blocks malolactic to keep the acidity, and never fines or filters. There's also a bone-dry Rosé de Loire, mostly Cabernet Franc, made with the same care. Expect precision, energy and a long saline finish.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

A magnum-scale wine for a magnum-scale meal: a big roast chicken, scallops with brown butter, miso cod, or a cheese course built around aged Beaufort or Comté. Magnum format slows aging — easy 10+ years.

Tasting Profile

Bone-dry, medium- to full-bodied, structured and broad. Ripe orchard fruit, beeswax, white pepper, dried herbs, crushed rock. Magnum format keeps the chalk-and-salt mineral spine taut and stretches the aging window.
