This is the wine that used to say "Reynard" on the label: Thierry Allemand's old-vine flagship, now sold simply as Cornas "R", and one of the reference points for what Northern Rhône Syrah can be. It's made entirely from the domaine's older vines, 34 to 90 years old and rooted in decomposed granite, including parcels Allemand bought from the legendary Noël Verset. Reynard itself is a classic granite-heavy site in the central core of Cornas. Allemand doesn't treat it as strictly single-vineyard, though: his oldest Chaillot vines sometimes go into this cuvée, and both wines can borrow from other sites depending on the year. Allemand founded the domaine in 1982, but he worked at Domaine Robert Michel and paid the bills as an electrician before he could commit to his own vines full-time. Today he farms fewer than five hectares organically, vinifies each parcel on its own and uses very little sulfur, sometimes none at all. The whole domaine makes only about 650 cases a year, so this isn't a bottle you'll see often. If you spot one, take it.

Robert Parker

98 points

"One of the finest wines crafted by Thierry Allemand, the 2023 Cornas Reynard wafts from the glass with aromas of mulberries, blueberries, violet, rose and pepper. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and structured, it’s seamless and concentrated, built around a tensile, precise core of fruit framed by velvety tannins, concluding with a long, ethereal finish. This is a bottle that Northern Rhône lovers will want to have in the cellar." —Yohan Castaing

More about Thierry Allemand

Thierry Allemand didn't just revive Cornas—he redefined it. Learning under Joseph Michel and Noël Verset in the early 1980s, he proved that this austere appellation could produce balanced, elegant, age-worthy reds without heavy tannin and new oak as crutches. Only 500 cases each of Chaillot and Reynard, five hectares total, organic farming, minimal sulfur: Allemand is one of the closest things the Northern Rhône has to a cult figure, and he earned it.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Rack of lamb with rosemary and garlic, venison loin with juniper, duck breast with black olives, or a slow-braised beef cheek daube.

Tasting Profile

Expect the dark, brooding side of Cornas Syrah: blackberry and black olive, cracked pepper, smoked meat and leather, with a stony, granitic edge. Old vines typically bring depth and a chewy, full body, framed by firm tannins and fresh acidity, and the finish runs long and savoury. Think a wilder, more untamed Hermitage, built to age.
