Sauvignon Blanc from the "Damned Mountain"—Sancerre's most emblematic hillside. Steep south/southwest slopes at nearly 45 degrees above Chavignol village, too precipitous for machines. Claude Thomas founded the domaine in the early 1950s with a few hectares; Claude and Florence Thomas-Labaille took over in 1994. Jean-Paul Labaille now leads. Kimmeridgian limestone (fossilized seashells and clay) plus "terres blanches" soils. Vines average 30+ years old. Aged in old foudres, bottled unfiltered. Flint and smoke from ancient seafloor.

Jean-Paul Labaille quit his job as a civil servant to take over his father-in-law's vineyard in Chavignol, and that decision altered everything. Now he's custodian of prime old vines planted on Kimmeridgian soils, some on the steep slopes of Les Monts Damnées. Fermented native, aged on lees, bottled unfiltered, the wines emerge rich, round, layered, with a subtle nose and a finish that doesn't quit. This is what happens when ambition meets limestone and age.

What Bowler Wine has to say about this wine:

100% Sauvignon Blanc. Thomas-Labaille has vines averaging thirty years old with some much older on the famously steep slope of Monts Damnés in Chavignol. They are sustainably farmed and harvested by hand. The wine is fermented with native yeasts in fiberglass and cement tanks, aged on its lees in stainless steel tanks (with a small proportion of used barrel in some vintages) for four to six months and bottled without filtration.
