Yes, the actor — but the wine is the real headline. Sam Neill founded Two Paddocks in Central Otago in 1993 and has spent three decades quietly building one of New Zealand's most respected certified-organic Pinot estates. This is a barrel selection drawn from his four certified-organic vineyards across Bannockburn, Gibbston and the Alexandra district — each contributing its own dialect of Central Otago: structure from Red Bank, fragrance from Fusilier, lift from Last Chance, perfume from First Paddock. Hand-picked, partially destemmed, wild-fermented, and aged in French oak with a light hand of new wood. 2024 was a windy, statistically cool season in Otago - frost-fighting into March and hail in February - but warm, settled late-summer weather brought the fruit in clean and ripe about a week early, giving Pinots that are fresher and finer-boned than the region's usual muscle. The result gives away nothing to its Hollywood pedigree.

More about Two Paddocks

Yes, that Sam Neill. The actor, who grew up in New Zealand's South Island, bought a paddock at Gibbston in Central Otago in 1993, when growing Pinot Noir there was still a leap of faith, and Two Paddocks has since grown into one of the region's most respected small estates. The name refers to Neill's paddock and the one next door, planted by Roger Donaldson.

That First Paddock gave its first vintage in 1997. In 1998 Neill planted the Last Chance vineyard on a terrace in the Earnscleugh Valley near Alexandra, among the southernmost vineyards in the world, and in 2000 he bought Red Bank, a former crop research station nearby that is now the estate's headquarters, where saffron and truffles grow alongside the vines. A block at Bannockburn, at the foot of Mount Difficulty, followed in 2014, so Two Paddocks now farms in all three of Central Otago's main valleys. The vineyards are certified organic.

The flagship estate Pinot Noir is a barrel selection from all the vineyards: hand-picked, wild-fermented and aged in French oak with a light hand on new wood. Alongside it come single-vineyard bottlings such as Last Chance and Fusilier, a Riesling, and the easygoing Picnic wines. Expect bright, perfumed, slightly wild Pinot with more finesse than the region's reputation for muscle suggests.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast, mushroom tart, grilled salmon, herbed lamb chops, or a slab of country pâté. Versatile enough for a Tuesday, dressy enough for a Saturday.

Tasting Profile

Vivid red cherry and raspberry over Otago thyme and wild herbs, with a hint of smoked charcuterie. Medium-bodied and bright-acid, with fine, firm tannins and a savory finish. More perfumed and less brawny than a warm Otago year.
