A legendary vintage from one of Brunello's most respected producers, sixteen years on. Andrea Cortonesi bought Uccelliera in 1986 from his employers and turned it into one of the benchmark estates of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, the warm southern corner of Montalcino where Brunello tends toward power and depth. His Riserva comes from a single hectare of Sangiovese planted in 1975, given extended aging in large Slavonian botti. The 2010 vintage is widely considered one of the greatest Brunello vintages of the modern era — a long, even growing season that produced wines of both power and finesse — and at sixteen years on the Riserva is just entering its window: dense, savory, structured, with decades of life ahead.

Antonio Galloni

"A huge, dark wine, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is endowed with massive depth. There is certainly no shortage of depth or pure power, but the slightly forward aromatics suggest the 2010 is on a fast aging curve. I would prefer to drink the 2010 Riserva over the next five years, and only with similarly rich, intense foods. Today, the wine's balance is hanging on a very thin thread, but as the fruit fades, the flavors will become gamier and the tannins will stick out more than they do today." —Antonio Galloni

"The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a dark, brooding and powerful wine. It shows immediate richness and evident complexity with spice, tobacco, cured meat and dried blackberry or plum. This a gorgeous wine that is only at the beginning of a long aging evolution. This wine is absolutely impeccable on all levels. It delivers stunning intensity, power, integrity and balance. The aromatic momentum continues to grow and becomes steadily more expansive and complete as the wine takes on more air in the glass. I was absolutely blown away by this Riserva. It confirms my conviction that Andrea Cortonesi is one of Brunello's most talented winemakers. I suggest waiting five years or more before opening this bottle." —Monica Larner

"Saturated with cherry, black currant and floral notes, this red evokes licorice, wild herb and stone accents. Solidly built, yet refined, with a Burgundian quality common to many ’10 Riservas. Shows superb balance and extraordinary length. Best from 2018 through 2035."

"There’s a lot to like on this bold, fragrant wine, starting with aromas of leather, scorched earth, grilled herb and ripe black-skinned fruit. The hearty palate offers mouthfuls of juicy black cherry, raspberry jam, licorice, vanilla and cinnamon framed in robust, velvety tannins. The fruit richness seamlessly offsets the hefty avb. Drink 2018–2025." —Kerin O'Keefe

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Bistecca alla fiorentina, wild boar ragù over pappardelle, osso buco with gremolata, or aged pecorino with a drizzle of chestnut honey and a hunk of crusty bread.

Tasting Profile

Black cherry, dried plum, leather, tobacco, balsamic, cured meat, and the dusty rose-and-tar signature of mature Sangiovese. Full-bodied, firm but polished tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, brooding finish that hints at decades more to come.
