Abbatucci is the reference point for biodynamic Corsican wine, and Faustine is the cuvee that shows you why without asking you to spend a fortune. This is the white, 100% Vermentinu (the Corsican name for Vermentino) from roughly 40-year-old vines on granite soils near Ajaccio. Jean-Charles Abbatucci is a fierce guardian of the island's native grapes, and everything here is certified biodynamic. The wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel on its lees for about six months, with no oak, so it stays fresh and precise. Named for Abbatucci's daughter, it's built to be drunk young and often. When Jon Bonné set out to explain what makes Corsican wine Corsican, he started with Jean-Charles Abbatucci. His father Antoine fought to save native grapes when others were ripping them out, and Jean-Charles, who took over in 1992, has turned the family's 18 hectares into a living museum of indigenous varieties, farmed biodynamically, with draft horses. These are pure, vibrant wines that need no makeup: no oodles of oak, no softened tannins, just Corsica in the glass.
