A dry Alsace Riesling with a twist: roughly ten percent of the fruit goes through a two-week semi-carbonic maceration on the skins before being blended back into the directly pressed juice, which gives the wine a savory, faintly grippy edge that straight-pressed Riesling never has. Mathieu Deiss, who also works alongside his father Jean-Michel at the family domaine, founded Vignoble du Reveur with Emmanuelle Milan in 2013 on seven hectares around Bennwihr, farming certified biodynamic on quaternary alluvial soils and pruning by the sap-preserving Guyot Poussard method. Vibrations comes off vines more than forty years old, ferments on indigenous yeasts, and spends around eleven months in foudre. Dry, textural and mineral rather than fruity: Riesling for people who like a little friction.

More about Vignoble du Reveur

Vignoble du Rêveur, "the dreamer's vineyard," is where Mathieu Deiss takes his family's ideas about terroir and field blends and pushes them further, into skin contact, whole bunches and wines that ignore Alsace's one-grape-per-bottle habit. Mathieu is the son of Jean-Michel Deiss of Domaine Marcel Deiss and still works at the family domaine. Rêveur is the separate project he runs with his partner Emmanuelle Milan.

It started with seven hectares around Bennwihr, just outside the Kaysersberg valley, which came to them from Mathieu's maternal grandfather and uncle in the early 2010s. They converted the vines straight away, and the estate is certified organic and biodynamic (Demeter). The soils are young Quaternary deposits, and the vineyards are planted mostly to Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, much of it co-planted.

In the cellar everything ferments on its native yeasts, and textures are built with skin maceration, partial whole-bunch work and long aging in large wood and amphora. Pierres Sauvages co-ferments three Pinots, including direct-pressed Pinot Noir, into a white. Vibrations is a dry Riesling with a dose of skin-macerated fruit. Singulier and Un Instant sur Terre go further into amber, skin-contact territory. Expect dry, textural, savory Alsace with more grip and less fruit than the classic style.
