Clos des Ducs is the crown jewel of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville—a 2.15-hectare monopole enclosed by stone walls on all sides, unchanged since 16th century documentation. The d'Angerville family acquired it in 1804. Guillaume d'Angerville, sixth generation, took over in 2003; his daughter Margaux joined in 2024. The steep, southeast-facing vineyard sits at the highest elevation in Volnay on strongly calcareous, stony, clay-rich soil with white marl. The estate converted to biodynamic farming starting in 2006 and has been fully biodynamic since 2009. Winemaking is non-interventionist: complete destemming, cold maceration, 10-12 day fermentation, pumping over twice daily, 12-18 months in barrel with 20% new oak. Serve with roasted game, beef, or aged Burgundian cheeses.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 95
"The 2023 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru seems to have a different aromatic profile from the other Premier Crus. More introverted at first with darker fruit as well as sea cave and light loamy scents, it takes time to cohere in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip. It is structured with good tension yet more backward and less giving than, say, Champans or Taillepieds at the moment. This is the one cuvée I would cellar for several years before broaching." -Neal Martin

Robert Parker

RP 96
"Aromas of dark berries cassis and cherries mingled with spices and orange rind in a complex bouquet introduce the 2023 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs, a medium to full-bodied, complete wine that in some respects represents the synthesis of the d'Angerville premiers crus—the finesse and perfume of Caillerets, the layers of Taillepieds and the structure of Champans, united in a whole that's more than the sum of its parts." -William Kelley

Jancis Robinson

JR 18.5
"Monopole. Tank sample. Bright mid crimson. Very dense and dramatic. Lots of fruit, lots of tannin. More tannin than any of the other d’Angerville 2023s, but more density too. So many elements. Something more monastic than ducal about this."

Decanter

"Elegant and aristocratic, the Clos des Ducs from d'Angerville is a bit restrained initially but opens up with pomegranate and blackberry fruit aromas and flavours on the palate. The wine is not astringent, but one senses the massive structure and impressive length at first taste. Because of the stony limestone and white marl soils in this 2.15ha holding at the top of the premier cru slope, this complex wine will take time to unwind, but it will undoubtedly be worth the wait." -Charles Curtis MW

Burgundy has long been the world's most famous wine region. But, underneath all the prestige, this region can be hard to get to know.

While Burgundy offers many great trophies from top producers in well-known villages like Vosne Romanee and Puligny Montrachet, it also offers excellent values to anyone willing to explore beyond the famous names. Our collection– one of the largest in the U.S. – has plenty of both!

From the very basics of Burgundy's regions and wines to the specific terroirs of individual single vineyards--
