Paradiesgarten is one of von Winning's coolest vineyards, at the top of the slope right under the Palatinate Forest, and it is the estate's finest, most elegant site. The vines grow on Buntsandstein, the red sandstone found in several of von Winning's best Deidesheim sites, and the vineyard is classified VDP Erste Lage, Germany's equivalent of Premier Cru. A cool site means the vintage shows. The estate finds a little more juicy, exotic fruit here in warm years, and fresh citrus with herbal notes in cooler ones. The farming is organic. Stephan Attmann's newer plantings are packed at 9,500 vines per hectare, roughly twice the usual density, so the roots have to dig deep and yields stay naturally low. If you think Pfalz Riesling always means broad and ripe, this is the bottle that will change your mind.

More about von Winning

Von Winning in Deidesheim makes some of the finest dry wines in the Pfalz, if not all of Germany. The estate's roots go back to 1849, but its fortunes rose in 2007 when Stephan Attmann took charge and moved Riesling out of stainless steel and back into large old oak fuder, with long, slow ferments and many months on the lees. The Grosses Gewächs read like a geology lesson: basalt in Pechstein, sandstone in Kirchenstück, limestone in Kalkofen. Rich yet ethereal, and built to age.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pan-roasted trout with brown butter and almonds; schnitzel with lemon and a cucumber-dill salad; seared scallops with beurre blanc; Vietnamese summer rolls with herbs and nuoc cham; fresh goat cheese with spring onions.

Tasting Profile

Expect a cool-site take on dry Pfalz Riesling: lime, lemon and white peach, often with herbal notes and a stony, mineral edge. Medium-bodied and crisp, with bright, mouthwatering acidity, it typically finishes dry, long and precise. It's more taut and elegant than the broad, ripe style many people associate with the Pfalz.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
