Lebanon has been making wine for thousands of years, and this bottle is a direct line to that history. Domaine des Tourelles — founded in 1868 and one of the country's oldest working wineries — bottles this white from two indigenous grapes, Merwah and Obeideh, off old ungrafted vines, some over a century old and grown high in the mountains among the cedars. Winemaker Faouzi Issa fermented each variety separately with wild yeasts and held it in steel to keep every ounce of freshness. It's generous, mineral and unlike anything else on the shelf — a taste of a wine culture older than most of the wine world.

More about Domaine des Tourelles

Domaine des Tourelles is a reminder that Lebanon is one of the wine world's old countries, not a new one. Founded in 1868, it is among the country's oldest wineries, and under winemaker Faouzi Issa it has become one of its most exciting.

François-Eugène Brun, a Frenchman who first came to work on the Beirut-Damascus road, settled in the Bekaa Valley and began making wine and arak; Arak Brun is still the estate's flagship spirit. Three generations of Bruns ran the place before the Issa and Issa el-Khoury families bought it in 2000. Faouzi studied agronomy at the American University of Beirut and winemaking in Montpellier, worked at Château Margaux and with René Rostaing in Côte-Rôtie, and came home in 2008 to take over the cellar.

His aim is lighter, fresher wines that taste of Lebanon rather than of international varieties. The 19th-century winery still ferments in big concrete vats, with wild yeasts, and Faouzi has made himself Cinsault's loudest champion, seeking out old Bekaa vines since 2014. Vieilles Vignes bottlings of Cinsault, Carignan and the native white grapes Merwah and Obeideh sit alongside classic red blends. Expect perfumed, supple, sun-warmed wines with surprising lift.
