Julien Crinquand is one of the most exciting young names in the Jura — he launched his estate in 2019 in Les Arsures (Arbois) using family vineyards already farmed organically since 2016. He trained with Fabrice Dodane at Domaine de St Pierre, and his approach is purist: native yeasts, minimal SO2, hands largely off. The 'Les Canons du Jean' series is named for his grandfather Jean (and 'canons' is French vigneron slang for bottles). The D'Jopin is his ouillé (topped-up, oxidatively guarded) Chardonnay — Jura purity at its most direct. Linear, mineral, electric, with the chalky bite the appellation does so well. A 2023 to drink now or over the next few years while the Crinquand fan club is still relatively quiet.

More about Julien Crinquand

Julien Crinquand belongs to the Jura's new generation of vignerons who learned at the elbow of the region's natural-wine pioneers, and it shows: these are pure, low-sulfur wines built on patience in the cellar.

He grew up in a farming family in Les Arsures, just outside Arbois, where his grandfather Jean's grapes were sold off to local buyers for years. After a stint in another line of work, Julien came home in 2016, trained with Fabrice Dodane at Domaine de Saint-Pierre and alongside Philippe Bornard, finished his viticulture and enology degree in 2017, and made his first wines under his own name with the 2019 vintage. His roughly five hectares of vines, spread across Les Bodines, Mailloche and Verleule, had already been converted to organic farming by 2016.

The cellar is a converted farmhouse and the approach is simple: hand harvesting, native yeasts, little or no added sulfur, and long aging in old demi-muids, anywhere from 12 to 36 months. The range covers all five Jura grapes: Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir for delicate, perfumed reds, and Chardonnay and Savagnin for whites in both the topped-up ouillé and the nutty sous voile styles. Everything is bottled as Les Canons du Jean, a nod to the grandfather whose portrait is on the label.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Comté at any age, roast chicken with morels, a wedge of Mont d'Or, scallops with brown butter, or simply a plate of charcuterie. The Jura playbook works here.

Tasting Profile

Bright lemon, green apple, and white pear meet chalk, almond, and a flicker of beeswax. Crisp, mineral, and tightly wound, with a saline finish and the precise, knife-edge acidity that defines fresh-style Arbois Chardonnay.
