This straight bourbon comes from a Bardstown family distillery that has lived through the whole modern story of the bourbon business: founded right after Prohibition, quiet through the lean years, and distilling again today. Thompson Willett built the distillery on the family farm in 1936, and his father and grandfather were already in the whiskey trade before him. Even Kulsveen and Martha Willett Kulsveen took over in 1984, when demand for premium whiskey was falling. Once their own warehouses ran dry, they bought whiskey from other Kentucky distilleries, and that's how Willett built its long reputation as an independent bottler. The original estate started distilling again in 2012, and the fifth generation of the family now runs it, with Drew Kulsveen as Master Distiller. Willett's own distilling is traditional and hands-on: limestone-filtered spring water from the estate, sour-mash fermentation, and a second pass through a copper pot still modelled on the family's original patented design. It's a bottle with real history behind it that doesn't need to be treated like a trophy. Pour it neat, add a splash of water, or build an Old Fashioned around it.

More about Willett Distillery

Willett is one of the great family names of Bardstown, and a rare independent Kentucky distillery whose whiskey is chased as hard as anything from the giants.

Thompson Willett and his father, Lambert, founded the distillery on the family farm in 1936. In 1984 his daughter Martha and her husband, Even Kulsveen, took over; distilling had already stopped, and the business, renamed Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, bottled whiskey bought from other Kentucky distilleries. The stills ran again in 2012, the Willett name returned, and their children, Drew and Britt Kulsveen, now run the place.

Willett distills its own bourbon and rye from six mash bills, on a column still and a copper pot still modeled on Thompson Willett's original. Expect big, spicy, characterful whiskey, often at high proof. A few drops of water help it open up.

What Skurnik Wines has to say about this wine:

Straight bourbon whiskey produced by Willett Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky
A blend of two mash bills: 72% corn, 13% rye, and 15% malted barley (85%) and 79% corn, 7% rye, 14% malted barley (15%)
Produced with limestone-filtered, spring-fed water from the distillery estate
Sour mash fermented in stainless steel for approximately 3–5 days using a proprietary yeast strain
Twice distilled using a column still made of copper and stainless steel and a Vendome copper pot still modeled after Willett’s original, patented pot still
Mash bills are aged separately for 4–6 years in new, char #4 American oak barrels from Independent Stave Company’s Kentucky cooperage and blended after maturity; non-age statement
Aromas of candied peanut, toasted coconut, and chocolate-covered wafer precede a sweet, silky palate of caramel, orange peel, cherry, and amaretto cookie with a peppery finish of arugula and charred oak
Non-chill filtered; 45% ABV

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Smoked brisket or burnt ends, bourbon-glazed ham, country ham biscuits, aged white cheddar, pecan pie, or a square of dark chocolate after dinner.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Kentucky straight bourbon profile: caramel, vanilla and toasted oak from new charred barrels, with sweet corn, baking spice and a hint of dried fruit. The palate is typically rich and rounded with a gentle peppery warmth, leading to a medium-long finish of oak, spice and lingering sweetness.
