From the Bull Swamp Vineyard, this 2023 Pinot Noir by William Downie is a nuanced and expressive wine that showcases the character of the region’s cool climate. With a beautiful balance of bright red fruit and earthy complexity, it offers a refreshing take on Pinot Noir that is both elegant and layered.

The nose reveals aromas of fresh cherries, raspberries, and strawberries, accompanied by delicate floral notes and a hint of spice. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, with soft tannins that add a smooth texture. The acidity keeps the fruit lively, while the subtle earthiness and spice provide depth. The finish is long and polished, with lingering flavors of red fruit and a touch of minerality.

This Pinot Noir is a perfect match for roasted duck, grilled lamb, or a mushroom risotto. While the 2023 vintage is ready to enjoy now, it has the potential to evolve and develop further complexity as it ages.

More about William Downie

Bill Downie has bet everything on one idea: that Gippsland, the cool, green dairy country east of Melbourne, is where Australian Pinot Noir can be at its most subtle and site-specific. He grows nothing else.

His training came from some of Pinot's most demanding teachers. He spent two years with Phillip Jones at Bass Phillip, Gippsland's cult Pinot estate, worked harvests in Burgundy with Domaines Fourrier and Hubert Lignier, and was asked to run the Lignier cellar for the 2004 and 2005 vintages after Romain Lignier's death. He also rose to senior winemaker at De Bortoli in the Yarra Valley. He started his own label in 2003, then left De Bortoli and narrowed his focus to Gippsland alone.

Since 2007 he and his wife, Rachel Needoba, have lived on Guendulain Farm at Yarragon, where they planted a high-density vineyard of 10,000 vines per hectare. He also leases a few more sites, including Bull Swamp, dry-grown on volcanic soil since 1981, farmed biodynamically and without tillage. In the cellar the approach is hands-off: hand sorting, fermentations with no additions, temperature control or punchdowns, neutral barrels, a small dose of sulfur at bottling, and no fining or filtration.

The wines are light on their feet, savory and distinct from one vineyard to the next.
