A top cuvée that chases perfume rather than power — this is Yann Bertrand's zero-sulfur Fleurie from his oldest family vines, and it's the bottling that shows what Gamay can do when nobody leans on it. The fruit is 100% Gamay noir à jus blanc off two hectares in two parcels, vines averaging 45 to 70 years old, rooted in decomposed granite and sand: poor, acidic soil that keeps yields small and the wine light on its feet. The vines are bush-trained, certified organic and farmed biodynamically to the lunar calendar, and in the cellar Bertrand works essentially zero-zero — whole clusters, no corrections, at most a touch of sulfur at bottling. He learned the trade from Jean Foillard, Yvon Métras and from Jacques Neauport, Jules Chauvet's quiet right hand, and his wines are now among the most chased-after in Beaujolais. 2024 was hard-won here: downy mildew and a violent hailstorm took a little under half the crop, but the fruit came in with a low pH that recalls a cool vintage like 2014 — exactly the high-tension register this delicate style thrives in. These don't sit around.

More about Yann Bertrand

It’s hard to believe that Yann Bertrand is no longer the new kid on the Beaujolais block. It feels like just yesterday that we were experiencing our first tastes of his stunningly fresh, juicy, intricate wines and marveling at the undeniable talent of the young Foillard and Métras protégé. Over the years, Yann’s wines have found more poise, confidence and clarity and today they are among the most sought after in the region.

Based in Fleurie, Yann farms a collection of top sites with plenty of old vines. He’s dedicated to natural viticulture and keeping things simple and clean in the cellar. The wines are 100% whole cluster, vinified in large concrete vats and aged in concrete or older barrel depending on the parcel and character of the vintage. They occasionally see a touch of sulfur at bottling, but for the most part, these are zero zero wines that are articulate, serious, and seriously delicious with an effusive, uncompressed energy that keeps you coming back for more.

Recently, Yann has grown his portfolio of vineyards, started to purchase a little bit of fruit from other like minded growers and has even expanded his reach beyond the borders of Beaujolais releasing a loving riff on Tavel with fruit sourced with the help of none other than Thibault Pfifferling.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with tarragon, duck breast with cherries, charcuterie and cornichons, mushroom and thyme tart, grilled salmon, a slab of Comté or Saint-Nectaire.

Tasting Profile

Light- to medium-bodied and silky, with red berry and floral aromas, a granite-driven mineral edge, bright fresh acidity and fine, barely-there tannin. Finishes fragrant and savory rather than sweet or heavy. Serve with a light chill.
