Antonio Galloni

"Full yellow. Captivating aromas of orange peel, minerals and honey, with sweaty suggestions of vineyard peach and cumin. Wonderfully bracing and precise, with great penetration and cut to its flavors of mandarin orange, powdered stone and graphite. The tactile finish suggests dusty dry extract more than it does tannins. A very Germanic style of late-harvest wine, with an exhilarating purity to its botrytis and an impression of strong tartaric acidity. This is 9% alcohol, with 97 grams of residual sugar." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

"Humbrecht insists he was amazed at just how much acidity and ripeness the cool summer, warm dry September, and attack of noble rot and shriveling combined to concentrate in his 2004 Riesling Clos Windsbuhl Vendange Tardive. At 9% alcohol, 93 grams of residual sugar, and with extreme 12 grams (tartaric) acidity by Alsace standards, this delicate yet almost piercing essence of Riesling plays more by Germanic rules. Lime, tangerine, nectarine, honey, and subtle smokiness usher in an explosively citric and unctuously honeyed palate display, and the finish nearly threatens to draw blood. One can't say that this is hugely complex as yet, but these are early days for such a wine, which I would not revisit for at least five years and plan on holding for at least two decades." —David Schildknecht

"Fresh, even racy, with grapefruit, lemon and honey aromas and flavors matched to an elegant profile. Still tightly wound, with a vivid structure. Needs time to open and gain complexity."

More about Zind-Humbrecht

Zind-Humbrecht is one of the reference points of Alsace: about 40 hectares of biodynamically farmed vines, a string of grand crus and walled clos, and Olivier Humbrecht in charge, who in 1989 became the first Frenchman to qualify as a Master of Wine.

The Humbrechts have grown vines in Alsace since 1620. The domaine as it stands dates from 1959, when Léonard Humbrecht married Geneviève Zind and merged the two family estates. Léonard pushed hard for low yields and great sites, and planted the Clos Saint Urbain in the 1970s. That is the domaine's monopole within the Rangen de Thann, the southernmost grand cru in Alsace, very steep and on volcanic soil. Olivier took over the winemaking in 1989 and moved the vineyards to organic farming (certified 1998) and biodynamics (certified 2002). His son Pierre-Émile joined in 2019. The cellars are in Turckheim, and the holdings also include the Brand, Hengst and Goldert grand crus and the Clos Windsbuhl, Clos Jebsal and Clos Hauserer.

In the cellar: whole-cluster pressing, native yeasts, and long lees aging in large casks. The wines are rich and textured with real depth, and the sweetness varies from wine to wine. Since the 2001 vintage each label carries a 1-to-5 sweetness index, so check it before you open the bottle.
