This is Pinot Noir (Spatburgunder) from Heerweg, a west-facing, limestone-heavy site in Ingelheim classified at the 1er Cru level, and it is Simone Adams's benchmark red. She farms biodynamically and ferments with whole clusters, aiming for elegance and lift rather than weight. The result is a cool-climate German Pinot with real transparency and grip. From the warm 2022 vintage, expect a touch more generosity of fruit.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"The 2022 Spätburgunder Ingelheimer Heerweg is from a lower-lying limestone site on the Mainzer Berg, fermented with 100% whole bunches. It aged for 1.5 years in oak, with a small proportion of new wood. A totally subtle nose requires much swirling, eventually sending out floral notions that verge on tart cherry. Finesse is immediately apparent on the taut, slender, flowing palate. It’s brim-full with red fruit, framed by exquisitely ripe but also seemingly translucent tannins that brush ever so gently. Fine freshness only underlines the purity of the ripe red berry fruit. Juicy and elegant, there’s real underlying chalkiness here." —Anne Krebiehl, MW

Robert Parker

93 points

"Fermented with 100% whole clusters and aged in Burgundian pièces for 18 months, the 2022 Heerweg Spätburgunder is a deep, pure and tight, refreshing and persistently saline Pinot with refreshing cherry aromas and the purity and tension of an excellent and charismatic Pinot. 12.5% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in February 2025." —Stephan Reinhardt

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
