Real Gevrey-Chambertin from a domaine built entirely from scratch, at what amounts to the accessible end of one of Burgundy's most coveted villages. "Symphonie" is the younger-vine bottling here — parcels planted in the early 1980s, most of them east of the Route Nationale, blended from village sites including En Billard and La Justice on clay and limestone. That's 1.75 hectares averaging around 40 years of vine age, farmed organically (if uncertified), triple sorted once in the vines and twice more on the tables, then destemmed and fermented with native yeast and a deliberately light hand. The Burguets are also famously among the very last families in Gevrey to pick, which is the whole philosophy in one detail: wait for the fruit to be genuinely ripe, then get out of its way. Alain was born to a piece-work vineyard laborer, left school at 14, bought his first 2.10 hectares in 1974 and bottled his own wine from day one; sons Jean-Luc and Eric came in alongside him in 1997 and 1999. Clive Coates held the domaine up as proof that a great Burgundy estate can still be built without money or a helpful marriage — and this is the bottling where that story is easiest to taste.

Alain Burguet started from scratch in Gevrey-Chambertin in 1976, piecing together over 40 small parcels as older vineyard owners retired. Now Jean-Luc and Eric Burguet run the domaine—working 9.5 hectares organically since the late '70s and biodynamically now, 100% destemmed fruit, minimal new oak, unfined and unfiltered. These are Pinot Noirs built for meditation, not showing off. Pure, mineral, alive.

Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied and classically Gevrey: red cherry and dark berry fruit with an earthy, savory edge underneath. Bright acidity, fine-grained tannins with some grip, and a firm, mineral-tinged finish. Dry throughout.
