Cornas tradition from one of the appellation's most historic addresses, now entering its drinking window. Domaine Alain Voge has been a touchstone for classical Cornas for decades — Alain himself passed in 2020, with Lionel Fraisse leading the estate today (Albéric Mazoyer ran the cellar from 2004 to October 2018, then handed over to Fraisse); ownership of the land remains with the Voge family, while the commercial company is shared between the Voge family, Michel Chapoutier and Lionel Fraisse. The house style is old-school Cornas: long maceration, restrained extraction, elevage in large neutral foudre. The Vieilles Vignes cuvee draws from Voge's older Cornas parcels — vines averaging around 60 years old, with the Vieilles Vignes cuvée drawing from older parcels (the eighty-year-old vines are reserved for the separate Les Vieilles Fontaines cuvée); the broader estate's vines range roughly 20-70 years old. 2015 was a major Northern Rhone vintage: concentrated, structured, built to age. Ten years on, the wine is just stepping into its window with another fifteen-plus years of upside. Blackberry, smoked olive, violet, peppercorn, bacon fat, warm granite. Decant generously.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"The 2015 Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes delivers tobacco, black olive tapenade, dried violet and leather aromas with a full-bodied, concentrated and ripe flavor profile. Structured by firm tannins, it’s savory and bold, showing a more extracted style relative to recent vintages. Give it two more years in bottle to start showing its full potential." —Nicolas Greinacher

Robert Parker

95 points

"Notes of tobacco, dry plums, spices, camphor and dark berries preface the 2015 Cornas Vieilles Vignes, a medium- to full-bodied, dense and deep Cornas with delicate, controlled power and a long, sweet and spicy finish. Despite its superb quality, I had anticipated a wine with more depth and breadth, one that could withstand longer aging in the context of the vintage." —Yohan Castaing

Jancis Robinson

17.5 points

"Just shedding its youthful, reductive rubberiness to unveil the fruit beneath. It's still in its infancy, but there is so much gorgeous fruit and texture. Long, leathery and liquorice-scented on the finish. Absolutely spot on for the style. Tweedy and rustic but everything in its right place."

Decanter

93 points

"Herbal bitters, roses and black cherries dominate this serious, tarry wine. It is powerful and has bags of energy while also being bright from refreshing acidity. Serrated tannins and sharp minerals limber up to a great saline finish."

Wine Spectator

96 points

"Dark yet inviting, with a well of boysenberry and blackberry compote flavors luring you in, while charcoal, bay leaf and cast-iron notes add contrast and range to hold your attention. The grippy finish shows cut and energy, with a lingering savory and rosemary edge."

Wine Enthusiast

95 points

"Layers of charred meat, granite and anise lend complexity to blackberry and cherry on the nose of this wine. Despite the ample fruit it maintains an earthen, mineral undertone and long finish with ripe, persistent tannins. This riveting wine should open and meld over the next decade and hold further."
