This is the first Grüner Veltliner on Alzinger's list, and probably the easiest way into one of the world's great white wine estates. Leo Alzinger's Grüner style puts finesse ahead of power and precision ahead of breadth. Here that style comes in Federspiel, the Wachau's lighter category, and the Alzingers themselves call this cuvée a juicy, elegant model of what a fruity Federspiel should be. The grapes grow on the Danube plain at Loiben and Dürnstein, where the river has laid fine sand over gravel. The pebbles in that gravel are well rounded because they travelled all the way from the Alps. The house generally keeps its cellar work simple, with spontaneous fermentations in stainless steel and its Federspiels bottled the March after harvest. If you like the Wachau but find some of its bigger bottles heavy going, this is the bottle for you.

"The 2025 Grüner Veltliner Dürnstein Federspiel comes from alluvial soils along the river between the Danube and the foothills. Fern and moss blend with gentle citrus on the fragrant nose. The palate is bright, vivid and wonderfully alive, bursting with pepper and citrus-driven verve." —Anne Krebiehl MW

More about Alzinger

Leo Alzinger Sr. established this Wachau icon in 1983 and has since defined what great Austrian Riesling can be. With holdings in two of the Danube's greatest sites—Loibenberg and Steinertal—he and his son Leo Jr. craft wines of crystalline purity and restraint. Fermented at low temperature in acacia casks and aged on fine lees, their single-vineyard Grüner Veltliners and Rieslings are wildly delicious with serious structure. These are wines that prove minimalism in the cellar is actually maximalism on the palate.

Tasting Profile

Expect a juicy, lighter-bodied Wachau Grüner in the Federspiel style: yellow apple, citrus and the grape's signature white pepper, with fine herbal notes. Steel fermentation keeps it crisp and precise, with lively acidity and a delicate texture, finishing dry, clean and refreshing. Think of it as a less grassy, more peppery alternative to Sauvignon Blanc.
