This is the way into Alzinger, one of the Wachau's quiet masters. Instead of one site, the Alzingers blend fruit from several vineyards around Dürnstein, grown on clay mixed with gneiss, mica schist and loam. Federspiel is the Wachau's lighter tier, and we've always loved Alzinger's for exactly that reason: lower alcohol and crystalline purity, from a family that prizes elegance over opulence. The estate sits in Unterloiben, just across the street from Knoll, and picks later than its neighbours. Leo Alzinger puts that down to old vines and the exposure of his parcels. Leo Jr., who took over in 2002 after a harvest in New Zealand, also lets the must settle for 24 hours after crushing so the green tannins drop out.

"The 2025 Riesling Dürnsteiner Federspiel is from sites at the foot of the hillsides, on the slopes themselves and on the Burgstall plateau. A touch of tangerine pulls through on the nose. The palate stays incredibly serene, poised, svelte and linear. Citrus zest, more than fruit, drives this pristine, bright wine. The finish is like apple or lemon sorbet, nothing less than cleansing and so pure. Hang on to this; it will soar in a decade." —Anne Krebiehl MW

More about Alzinger

Leo Alzinger Sr. established this Wachau icon in 1983 and has since defined what great Austrian Riesling can be. With holdings in two of the Danube's greatest sites—Loibenberg and Steinertal—he and his son Leo Jr. craft wines of crystalline purity and restraint. Fermented at low temperature in acacia casks and aged on fine lees, their single-vineyard Grüner Veltliners and Rieslings are wildly delicious with serious structure. These are wines that prove minimalism in the cellar is actually maximalism on the palate.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Wachau Federspiel profile: lime, lemon zest and fresh peach or apricot, lifted by herbal notes and a stony, mineral edge. Typically light to medium-bodied with a lively but substantial texture, bright acidity and a dry, clean, mouthwatering finish. Think of a crisp, dry German Riesling at a lighter, more delicate weight.
