Most Smaragd Riesling asks you to wait, but the Alzingers say their Hollerin often opens up earlier. That makes it the friendliest way into the top tier of one of the Wachau's most precise cellars. Hollerin is the slope facing the Kellerberg, starting where that neighbouring hillside runs out into the plain. Its terraces sit on soil weathered from Gfรถhl gneiss, with loess on the flat ground at the foot, and erosion has mixed the two together. Alzinger's parcel is in the top third, where the clay and loam are shallower and the rock has more say. The cellar work is simple: spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel, then aging in steel with a little neutral Austrian oak. Leo Alzinger also picks later than some of his Unterloiben neighbours, and he's clear that the extra hang time is about balance, not sugar. If you love Wachau Riesling but don't want to cellar a bottle for years before you open it, this is the one to reach for.

"The 2025 Riesling Hollerin Smaragd faces southwest and sits on slightly deeper soils in the upper reaches of the site. A touch of ivy accompanies subtle mandarin and tangerine notes on the nose. The palate wraps that fruit into streamlined freshness, filling it with citrus zest, joy and verve. Beneath it all lies a seriously stony, concentrated yet compact wine with a great future." โ€”Anne Krebiehl MW

More about Alzinger

Leo Alzinger Sr. established this Wachau icon in 1983 and has since defined what great Austrian Riesling can be. With holdings in two of the Danube's greatest sitesโ€”Loibenberg and Steinertalโ€”he and his son Leo Jr. craft wines of crystalline purity and restraint. Fermented at low temperature in acacia casks and aged on fine lees, their single-vineyard Grรผner Veltliners and Rieslings are wildly delicious with serious structure. These are wines that prove minimalism in the cellar is actually maximalism on the palate.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Wachau Smaragd profile: ripe stone fruit like apricot and peach, with citrus, white flowers and a stony, mineral edge. Typically dry and full-bodied for Riesling, with a slightly creamy, compact texture from aging in steel and neutral oak, bright acidity and a fruity, lingering finish. Think of a fuller, riper version of dry German Riesling.
