Alzinger makes two wines from Loibenberg, and they grow in very different ground. The Riesling sits on the hill's barren, shallow soils, while this Grüner Veltliner grows where loess dominates the topsoil, which gives it a creamier texture. For 2025 the fruit comes from mid-slope, from a patch of deeper loess over gneiss tucked into a concave fold of the hillside. Erosion and gravity have built up deep soils of weathered Gföhl gneiss and loess there, and halfway down sits a dark, buried layer of humus where the roots like to grow. The roots have so much room that their water and nutrient supply stays balanced. Loibenberg's south-facing terraces are considered the warmest in the Wachau, but the Alzingers point out that shade from protective forests and cool air from side valleys open to the north temper the site, especially at night. They describe this wine as deep spice and a full body with a concentrated, creamy texture held in check by elegant counterpoints. They call 2025 a year of vibrant, taut, precise acidity, which is exactly the kind of counterweight a wine this generous wants.

"The 2025 Grüner Veltliner Loibenberg Smaragd comes from the middle of the slope, on a portion of deeper loess over gneiss in a concave fold of the hillside. A gorgeously mossy brightness on the nose suggests freshness. The palate is smooth, bright and savory, with roundness, fullness and textural richness countered by lemon. Even the finish is zesty. This has backbone, poise and elegance." —Anne Krebiehl MW

More about Alzinger

Leo Alzinger Sr. established this Wachau icon in 1983 and has since defined what great Austrian Riesling can be. With holdings in two of the Danube's greatest sites—Loibenberg and Steinertal—he and his son Leo Jr. craft wines of crystalline purity and restraint. Fermented at low temperature in acacia casks and aged on fine lees, their single-vineyard Grüner Veltliners and Rieslings are wildly delicious with serious structure. These are wines that prove minimalism in the cellar is actually maximalism on the palate.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Wachau Smaragd Grüner Veltliner profile: ripe yellow apple and stone fruit, plenty of white pepper and deep spice, and green, herbal notes. It's typically full-bodied and dry, with a concentrated, creamy texture from the loess soils. Fresh acidity keeps it lively, and the finish is long and peppery.
