Anne-Sophie Dubois calls on a Burgundian mindset to make Fleurie, and this is her most structured cuvée, so a 2014 is a real chance to see what her Gamay becomes after a decade in bottle. Dubois was born and raised in Champagne and learned her trade in Burgundy. She made her first Fleurie vintage in 2007, and she still prefers a Burgundian approach in the cellar to the region's usual playbook. L'Alchimiste is her selection of vines more than 40 years old, from her plots in the lieu-dit Les Labourons at 380 meters, where shallow sandy soils sit over pink granite bedrock. She ages it in cement and neutral oak. The name comes from Paulo Coelho's novel The Alchemist, a story about following your dreams, which suits a Champagne native who came to Fleurie to make Gamay her own way. If you only know Fleurie as young and pretty, a mature bottle of her most serious wine will change your mind.

More about Anne-Sophie Dubois

Anne-Sophie Dubois moved from Champagne to Fleurie and quickly established herself as one of the region's most thoughtful vignerons. Since 2015 she's been making Les Cocottes with 100% whole-cluster carbonic maceration, bottled in spring for early drinking, but with an Anne-Sophie Dubois level of aromatic nuance and mineral backbone underneath. This is bright, juicy Beaujolais that doesn't compromise on complexity. After years away from the market, Les Cocottes is back, and it's everything you remember.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with morels or wild mushrooms; coq au vin; duck breast with a cherry sauce; a charcuterie board with saucisson sec and pâté de campagne; aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the floral, red-fruited side of Fleurie: raspberry, red cherry and violet, with a savoury, granite-driven mineral edge. Light-bodied but structured, with fresh acidity and fine, firm tannins; cement and neutral oak keep the fruit pure rather than oaky. With bottle age, this style typically turns earthier and silkier, closer to red Burgundy than young Beaujolais.
