The oldest Syrah planting on the Sonoma Coast, three miles from the Pacific at 850 feet, in a spot everyone once thought far too cold for the grape — hence the name, a play on que sera, sera: whatever will be, will be. Al and Virginia Rago planted it above Occidental in 1994 on Goldridge soils shot through with sedimentary schist, shale and fractured mudstone, and Arnot-Roberts took over stewardship of the site in 2013, now farming it organically with complete control. The long, cool season on this forested ridgetop is what makes the wine: Syrah here comes out spicy and aromatic rather than jammy, closer in spirit to the northern Rhone than to anything else in California. Fermented 100% whole cluster with native yeasts, submerged cap and pumping over, in the manner of Gentaz and Juge, with little or no new wood to get in the way. This is a benchmark cool-climate California Syrah from the site that proved it could be done.

"The 2023 Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard is fabulous. Inky red fruit, blood orange, sage, mint and white pepper all race out of the glass. This bold cool-climate Syrah exudes personality. White pepper, mint, chalk, dried flowers and exotic spice tones lend character. The 2023 is a bit lean, but it has just enough mid-palate density to pull it all together." —Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard comes from vines planted in 1994 west of the town of Occidental, four miles from the Pacific Ocean. Grapes were harvested on November 1, and it was fermented using mostly whole clusters. Matured for 10 months in used French oak, it has intense aromas of boysenberry, sage, white pepper and botanicals. The light-bodied palate is delicately styled with crunchy flavors and 11% alcohol. It’s framed by chalky tannins and bright acidity and has a long, perfumed finish." —Erin Brooks

"The Que Syrah has become a classic and a standout in the Arnot-Roberts lineup. The vineyard is one of the oldest Syrah plantings on the Sonoma Coast, a gem of a site for cool-climate Syrah in California. Planted in 1993, it’s located 800 feet above sea level, just 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The Arnot Roberts team began farming the vineyard in 2013 and purchased it in 2016. The 2023 vintage is exceptional, with slightly higher residual sugar than previous releases, adding richness to the palate. You’ll get that classic black pepper note and a lovely salty, coastal freshness. On the palate, a savoury, almost meaty character mixes well with the spices. The finish is long and smooth. With only six barrels made from this 2.5-acre vineyard, it’s a limited and expressive wine, balancing elegance and intensity beautifully." —Ana Carolina Quintela

More about Arnot-Roberts

Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts, along with a small group of fellow trailblazers, have led the way in helping redefine what California wine can be and taste like. Their wines have a deep sense of terroir, refined and elegant structure and are deliciously complex. In 2001, when they began this endeavor, finding local wines with these qualities was tough. But along with their aforementioned colleagues, they started a small revolution and these days you can walk into many a wine shop and find an example of what's been coined, “The New California Wine”.

But, perhaps a better sobriquet for Duncan and Nathan's wines might be The New California Classic. Their wines are a nod to the great California wines made in the decades before Parkerization. They have shown that California is capable of producing wines that shine in their youth and will gracefully age to glorious full maturity.

Arnot Roberts has become synonymous with New California wine in a lot of ways. Since their founding in 2001, they've spent a lot of time scouring the state for some of the best previously unknown vineyard sites, doing so with a respect for the environment that is nothing short of remarkable. They work with all their growers to encourage organic farming and minimize their environmental impact: these are wines that are not only delicious, but that you can feel good about drinking.

Like all great winemakers, the cornerstone of Duncan and Nathan’s approach starts in the vineyard. They are dedicated to finding super distinct and unique sites from Mendocino in the North to the Santa Cruz Mountains South of the Bay Area. Their enormous respect for California’s terroir have led them to some of the state’s most celebrated vineyards. But they aren’t just about the famous sites; they know the state is full of amazing and still unheralded regions and they’ve done an incredible job of hunting out great vines in very special spots.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Lamb chops with herbes de Provence, grilled merguez with couscous, black-pepper-crusted rib-eye, duck with green olives, or a mushroom and thyme tart. Tapenade on grilled bread works beautifully too.

Tasting Profile

Dark berry fruit with violet, cracked black pepper and a savory, briary edge — the house signature from this site, bright fuchsia in the glass. Expect spice and lift rather than weight.
