For the first time, Aston went beyond its own vineyard to make this one: the 2021 blends estate fruit from Annapolis with Pinot from two vineyards further south around Occidental, Riddle and Joy Road. The point is that those two corners of the Sonoma Coast have almost nothing in common — Annapolis brings dark, umami-rich forest floor, Occidental brings vivacious red fruit and bright acidity — and together they add up to a more complete wine than either does alone. The estate itself sits five miles and two ridge lines in from the Pacific, cool enough to hold acidity but just outside the fog line, on southwest-facing slopes of Goldridge loam that the family cheerfully compares to Burgundy's grand cru hillsides. Thomas Rivers Brown, who now owns Aston outright, works only with Pinot Noir here, and with the vines past twenty years old the fruit ripens thoroughly at lower sugars — the house style has gotten quieter and better for it. This is the appellation wine rather than the flagship, and it over-delivers accordingly: real weight and depth without ever becoming heavy or tiring.
