Domaine aux Moines farms more than half of an entire appellation: 12 of the 22 hectares that make up Savennières-Roche aux Moines, on south- and southwest-facing hillsides that border the famous Coulée de Serrant. This is the estate's older-vine, age-demanding dry Chenin Blanc (the younger vines go into a separate cuvée, Le Berceau des Fées), so it's the bottle that shows best what this small corner of Anjou, on the hills above the Loire just south of Angers, can do. The name dates back to the monks ("moines") of the Abbaye de St Nicolas, who tended vines here in the Middle Ages. Monique Laroche founded the modern estate, and her daughter Tessa runs it today. The work is slow and old-fashioned in the best way: certified organic since 2011, with yields often below the appellation's already strict cap of 30 hl/ha. The house usually ages most of its wine in tank, with the rest in mostly used casks, so the site does the talking rather than the oak. The estate's wines drink well young and can easily age 20 years or more, which makes a 2024 a good one to buy now and come back to later.

More about Aux Moines

In Anjou, Monique Laroche and daughter Tessa tend a nearly-century-old Cabernet Franc vineyard blended with 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is Loire Cabernet Franc without the fussiness—structured, direct, the kind of wine that makes sense with food and asks nothing of you but an open mind. Farm-family reliability meets age-worthy depth.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Loire pike-perch or sole with beurre blanc; seared scallops with brown butter; roast chicken with morels and cream; pork rillettes with cornichons; aged Comté or a firm goat cheese like Sainte-Maure.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Savennières profile: quince, yellow apple, citrus peel and chamomile, with a beeswax note and a stony, schist-driven minerality. Typically full-textured yet taut, with firm, bracing acidity and little oak influence, finishing dry, long and savoury. Think of a more structured, mineral take on dry Vouvray, built to age and often more expressive with time in bottle.

Loire Valley Wines

The Loire Valley is France’s greatest source of value for anyone looking for elegant, terroir-driven wines. Our collection celebrates the region’s great diversity, with the mineral-driven whites of Muscadet and Sancerre, the beautiful Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Francs from villages like Vouvray and Chinon, and natural wines from everywhere in the region. Sometimes wonderfully fresh and gulpable, sometimes serious and age-worthy, the prices are always very reasonable.
