Avignonesi's Vin Santo is among Italy's most sought-after sweet wines, and it's made the hard way: white grapes dried for months, then years of aging in tiny sealed caratelli with the estate's century-old "madre" yeast, with much of the liquid lost to evaporation. The output is tiny and intensely concentrated. This 1991 is from a private collection and now fully mature, amber-gold and resolved.

More about Avignonesi

Avignonesi is a Montepulciano name with two claims to fame: its legendary Vin Santo, one of Italy's great sweet wines, and its reinvention as one of Italy's largest biodynamic estates.

The winery was founded in 1974 by the Avignonesi family together with Ettore Falvo, and over the following decades it built its reputation on Vino Nobile, the Merlot-based Desiderio and, above all, Vin Santo. Belgian owner Virginie Saverys bought into the estate in 2007, took full ownership in 2009, and converted everything to organic and then biodynamic farming. Today about 175 hectares of vines, spread across Montepulciano and Cortona, are certified organic (since 2016) and biodynamic (since 2019), and every wine is made from estate fruit.

The Vin Santo is made the slow way. White Malvasia, Trebbiano and Grechetto grapes dry on cane mats in the vinsantaia for months, then ferment and age for years in tiny sealed caratelli of about 50 liters, each seeded with the estate's long-lived madre. The Occhio di Pernice ("partridge eye") version is made from Sangiovese and aged even longer, ten years or more.

For everyday drinking, look to the Vino Nobile and the single-vineyard Poggetto di Sopra: Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile, as it's known here) with Montepulciano's earthy, cherry-scented charm.
