Eleven acres of forty-five-year-old vines on the upper slope of La Fussiere make this the domaine's largest single holding and the wine the Bachelet brothers stake their home reputation on. La Fussiere climbs the south-facing hillside above Dezize-les-Maranges to around 400 meters over Jurassic marl littered with fossil-rich limestone scree; the stones drain hard and the elevation keeps the nights cool, so this is the firmer, more mineral and more structured of their two Maranges premiers crus, where Clos de la Boutiere lower down is the plusher one. Maranges sits at the southern tip of the Cote de Beaune and has never had the name recognition of its neighbors, which is exactly why premier cru red from here is one of Burgundy's real bargains. Fermentation runs with about twenty percent whole clusters and the wine is raised mostly in used barrels, so nothing gets between you and the fruit. The 2024 harvest was tiny but the Cote de Beaune reds came out light-footed, floral and finely tannic; drink this over the next five to eight years.

"From a massive holding of 4.5 ha in pinot plus another 1.5 ha planted to chardonnay. This is aromatically similar to the old vines Maranges but with even more spice and earth components in evidence. The sleeker, fine and more mineral-driven middle weight flavors possess a more sophisticated mouthfeel before culminating in a sneaky long, complex and well-balanced finale. This is supple enough on the mid-palate that it could easily be approached after only 2 to 3 years of keeping if desired."

"The 2024 Maranges La Fussières 1er Cru Rouge, which comes from limestone soils, has a charming floral nose that is very pure, with scents of crushed strawberry and tayberry, more fruit-forward compared to the Vieilles Vignes. The palate is framed by pliant tannins and quite a vibrant line of acidity that keeps this on its toes. The mineral core is more apparent towards the finish as it lingers tenderly in the mouth. More about Bachelet-Monnot

Alex and Marc Bachelet started their domaine in 2005 from a portion of the family vineyards. By 2011 they had acquired 22 hectares of old to very old vines in Maranges, Santenay, Chassagne and Puligny-Montrachet. They farm with sustainable methods that they describe as ‘très lutte raisonnée’, which literally translates as "the very reasoned struggle." In the cellar they are extremely meticulous with their use of sulphur, preferring to "micro-dose" when and where necessary and never at bottling. They use 350 liter barrels to avoid any overt "flavor" of oak spice and emphasize the super precise, mineral flavors and taught structure. Marc explains that the small doses of sulphur allowed him to bottle the wine with very little free SO2 and still feel confident they are well protected from the elements. The results are stunning: clean, pure, transparent and bursting with mineral energy. There is very little to no reduction on the wines, yet they seem to be built to last for many years.

Roast pork or chicken, steak frites, a charcuterie board, grilled sausages, or aged Epoisses. Its structure handles red meat better than most southern Cote de Beaune reds.

Tasting Profile

Aromas of dark cherry, cranberry, dried herbs and stony earth. Medium bodied and firm, with more grip and mineral cut than plush fruit, and bright acidity running through. Fine, slightly gritty tannins on a long, savory finish.
