Les Referts is the generous end of Puligny: a premier cru at the down-slope edge of the band on the Meursault border, alongside the parcels of Sauzet, where clay-rich soils lend roundness and flesh rather than the vertical tension of the sites higher up. Brothers Marc and Alexandre Bachelet have risen fast to the front rank of Cote de Beaune whites, prized for precise, mineral Chardonnay, and their holding here is just over an acre of forty-year-old vines. The whites are pressed slowly, fermented with native yeasts in 350-liter barrels, and aged twelve months in wood plus six in tank, without batonnage, for purity and length. 2024 was cold, wet and mildew-ridden, giving Burgundy its smallest crop in many growers' careers and its most classical whites in a decade; Referts' natural generosity is a good foil for that much acidity. A wine to lay down and reward patience.

"Once again impenetrable reduction renders the nose unreadable. More interesting are the gorgeously textured, fresh and tension-filled flavors that aren't quite as concentrated or stony, but they do offer markedly better depth and persistence on the clean, dry and balanced finale. The innate class of a fine Puligny is very much front and center and all this beauty needs is 7 to 10 years in a cool cellar."

"The 2024 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru has a very gifted, crushed stone/petrichor-tinged nose that has much more animation and energy than the previous vintage. The palate is taut and fresh, vibrant, stony and penetrating. So much energy is tied up in this Puligny but there is real persistence and power on the exquisitely defined finish. This is just an outstanding Les Referts among the best you will find in this vintage." —Neal Martin

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Worthy of a special meal: lobster or scallops in butter, roast capon or turkey, veal in cream, and richer fish like turbot or halibut.

Tasting Profile

Aromas of yellow orchard fruit, oyster shell and crushed rock. Balanced and taut on the palate, with luscious fruit framed by zingy citrus and fine acidity, the 2024 pitching that acidity a notch higher than usual. Long, mineral finish; built to age.
