A love letter to old Cinsault from one of the Swartland's most original voices. Adi Badenhorst's Ramnasgras pulls 100% Cinsault from a tiny single vineyard of bush vines planted in 1964 on decomposed granite, southeast-facing and just over a hectare and a half. Whole bunches go into seasoned wooden vats with a single daily pump-over, then the wine settles into large foudre for a year. The result reads like Cinsault's best self: thyme, rosemary, tea leaf, lavender, olive and brambleberry on the nose, a silky medium-bodied palate that feels weightless rather than light, and a long, charming finish. Not a high-acid wine, but unmistakably fresh — a Cape red of finesse over force, in conversation with old-school Provence and the Loire as much as with Swartland.

"The 2023 Cinsault Ramnasgras comes from a single vineyard parcel planted in the 1960s, raised in concrete vat. This is more vigorous on the nose than the Ringmuur, displaying raspberry, wild strawberry and a touch of vanilla. The palate is ripe and juicy (apparently this was the ripest fruit Adi Badenhorst picked in 2023, coming in at around 13.5% alcohol), with the small amount of Grenache lending flesh on the finish." —Neal Martin

"This is just my vibe. The A. A. Badenhorst Family Wines 2023 Swartland Ramnasgras Cinsault comes from old bush vines planted in 1964. Exceptionally expressive and lifted, it shows delicate red fruit, floral notes and an effortless grace that belies its depth. Adi Badenhorst believes Cinsault has remarkable aging potential, and recent releases of earlier vintages such as 2018 and 2019 demonstrate just how beautifully it evolves over time. "The Burgundy of the Swartland" is his refrain. The tannins are fine and integrated, giving the wine quiet structure beneath its perfume and purity. On the back label, the phrase “irrigated with tears” appears in Afrikaans, a poetic nod to the care and devotion required to farm these precious vines." —Monica Larner

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast lamb with herbes de Provence, grilled duck breast, mushroom risotto, charcuterie, or merguez sausages. Lovely with North African tagines and ratatouille; serve with a slight chill in summer.

Tasting Profile

Thyme, rosemary, tea leaf, lavender, olive and brambleberry lead into a silky, medium-bodied palate. Fresh rather than high-acid, with fine-grained tannins and a long, perfumed close.
