Malbec is still a rarity in Israel, which makes this an easy, low-stakes way to try a familiar grape from an unfamiliar place. The wine is kosher and mevushal under OK supervision and certified for Passover. Barkan is one of the country's largest wineries, based at Kibbutz Hulda in the Samson region about halfway between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, drawing fruit from vineyards spread across Israel's growing regions. The Classic line is the entry tier and behaves like one in the best sense: unfussy, fruit-forward, made for drinking young rather than cellaring. Serve it with a slight chill and do not overthink it.
