Malbec is still a rarity in Israel, which makes this an easy, low-stakes way to try a familiar grape from an unfamiliar place. The wine is kosher and mevushal under OK supervision and certified for Passover. Barkan is one of the country's largest wineries, based at Kibbutz Hulda in the Samson region about halfway between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, drawing fruit from vineyards spread across Israel's growing regions. The Classic line is the entry tier and behaves like one in the best sense: unfussy, fruit-forward, made for drinking young rather than cellaring. Serve it with a slight chill and do not overthink it.

More about Barkan

Barkan is one of Israel's biggest wineries and a dependable source of everyday kosher wine, made under OK supervision. Its roots go back to the Friedman Winery, founded in Petah Tikva at the end of the 1800s; after several changes of hands the business took the Barkan name in 1990, after the industrial park where it was then based.

Today the winery sits at Kibbutz Hulda, in the Samson region roughly halfway between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, and draws grapes from across the country, from the Golan Heights and the Galilee down to the Jerusalem Mountains and the Negev highlands around Mitzpe Ramon. The range is broad and tiered, from the entry-level Classic line up through Reserve and Superieur bottlings, with an emphasis on reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec, plus easygoing whites like a lightly sweet Moscato. Think of the Classic wines as friendly, fruit-forward bottles for the holiday table, made to drink young.
