The flagship Shiraz of Barr-Eden Estate (the project formerly known as Love Over Gold) — sourced from a single avenue of vines planted in 1997 at the very top of Mengler's Hill, where Eden Valley meets the Barossa at some of the highest Shiraz altitudes in Australia. Tim Howser, Joel Mattschoss, Pierre-Henri Morel, and Michael Twelftree ferment and age the wine entirely in concrete tank to preserve the cool-climate aromatic lift the site is known for — no new wood, no extraction theatrics, just transparent fruit and elevation. The 2020 shows violet, blueberry, and plum aromas layered over graphite, aniseed, and crushed herbs, with the lifted aromatic and fine-tannin frame built for ten to fifteen years in the cellar.

"The 2020 Avenue to Gold Shiraz hails from Mengler's Hill, which sits between 465 meters to 545 meters above sea level and straddles both Eden Valley and Barossa Valley. The fruit was handpicked, left on skins for 17 days, pressed, then moved to concrete for 12 months of maturation. The wine was then moved to three-year-old French puncheon with a small portion of pressings. I love the freshness of this wine. The tannins are silty and fine. The wine is layered with red garden rose florals, black tea, crushed quartz and all manner of fine things. It feels reliant on natural structure, which is hugely attractive. 4,920 bottles filled. 14.3% alcohol, sealed under Diam." —Erin Larkin
