Bereche et Fils, Champagne Blancs de Blanc Ludes 1er Cru “Beaux Regards”, 2022

Chardonnay grown in a Pinot Noir village, which is exactly why it tastes the way it does. Beaux Regards comes from under half a hectare of old vines on the mid-slope of Ludes, the Bereche family's home 1er cru, where the soil is a very fine-grained clay laced with limestone and flint rather than the pure chalk of the Cote des Blancs. The result is a blanc de blancs built on density and texture as much as on cut. As with the rest of the family's top cuvees, the wine ferments in barrel, malolactic fermentation is blocked, the dosage stays minimal and the second fermentation happens under cork rather than a crown cap. 2022 was a sunny, drought-tinged year in Champagne that was rescued by well-timed August rain, and the fruit came in clean and ripe with its acidity intact.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2022 Extra-Brut Beaux Regards is all Chardonnay from a massale selection of old vines picked on September 8 at 11.7% and 11.8% potential alcohol but with very low pH, an example of the current state of affairs in Champagne. Rich and beautifully resonant on the palate, the 2022 impresses with its substance. There's gorgeous textural breadth and power. Dosage is 2.5 grams per liter." —Antonio Galloni

"Originating from two west-facing sites and harvested on September 8, the 2022 Blanc de Blancs Les Beaux Regards bursts from the glass with aromas of citrus oil, pear and toasted bread mingled with nuances of dried flowers and iodine. Medium- to full-bodied, ample and rich but vibrant, it is built around a fleshy core of fruit enlivened by chalky extract, seamlessly uniting power and incisiveness despite the hot, dry conditions of the growing season, and it concludes with a long, saline finish. It was disgorged in January 2026 with a dosage of 2.5 grams per liter." —Kristaps Karklins

More about Bereche et Fils

The great grower Champagnes that excite Champagne lovers these days tend to fall into a certain category, with low dosage, low sulphur, and a decidedly edgy vibe. We love them. But one grower has managed to gain worldwide fame—not to mention a cult-like obsession here in the U.S.—without going in that direction: Bérêche & Fils.

On paper, at least, everything about Bérêche is classical. This starts with history, as this is a domaine that was founded just before the U.S. Civil War. It continues with land. They don't farm some obscure corner of Champagne, but in its historic heart, with plots scattered around the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne.

Traditional and classical, perhaps, and yet something sets it apart: sheer excellence. Raphaël and Vincent Bérêche's intense focus on high quality farming and precise work in the cellar is exactly the sort of hard work that was too often missing from the pre-grower Grand Marques. And it results in wines that people—no matter how geeky their Champagne tastes—just love.

Oysters, seared scallops, sushi and sashimi, sole meuniere, or a wedge of aged Comte.

Tasting Profile

Lemon confit, apricot, cream and white flowers over a stony, flinty core. Medium bodied and textured for a blanc de blancs, with bright acidity, a fine mousse and a long chalky finish. Bone-dry.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
