Meunier is the grape Champagne likes to dismiss, and this is one of the bottles that makes the dismissal look silly. It is 100% Pinot Meunier from two lieux-dits on the left bank of the Vallee de la Marne at Mareuil-le-Port, where low-yielding vines around forty-five years old sit on a north-facing slope of clay, sand and limestone: cool exposure, poor soil, small crops. The Bereche brothers ferment and age it in 350- and 600-liter barrels, block malolactic fermentation, give it roughly three years in bottle under cork and finish it extra brut, which pulls Meunier's natural roundness tight. 2022 was a warm, sunny Champagne vintage rescued from drought by well-timed August rain, conditions that suit a north-facing site like this one. Expect orchard and stone fruit with real soil-driven depth rather than the simple fruitiness Meunier gets accused of.

Medium- to full-bodied, ample and textural, it is built around a fleshy core of fruit, animated by tangy acidity and concludes with a saline finish where subtle bitter phenolics assert themselves. The great grower Champagnes that excite Champagne lovers these days tend to fall into a certain category, with low dosage, low sulphur, and a decidedly edgy vibe. We love them. But one grower has managed to gain worldwide fame—not to mention a cult-like obsession here in the U.S.—without going in that direction: Bérêche & Fils.

On paper, at least, everything about Bérêche is classical. This starts with history, as this is a domaine that was founded just before the U.S. Civil War. It continues with land. They don't farm some obscure corner of Champagne, but in its historic heart, with plots scattered around the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne.

Traditional and classical, perhaps, and yet something sets it apart: sheer excellence. Raphaël and Vincent Bérêche's intense focus on high quality farming and precise work in the cellar is exactly the sort of hard work that was too often missing from the pre-grower Grand Marques. And it results in wines that people—no matter how geeky their Champagne tastes—just love.
