When you taste this wine, remember: some of these vines were planted in the 1950s, making them the oldest Chardonnay vines in Germany. Julian Huber, who took the reins after his father Bernhard passed in 2014, sources from two parcels in Malterdingen - the 1950s block and a younger 1990 planting - and treats them with full Burgundian respect: classic vertical pressing, full destemming, spontaneous fermentation in barrique with about a third new oak (Damy), and 14 months on the lees. The 2023 is exactly what it should be: deep, calcareous, layered with ripe lemon and flint, full-bodied yet remarkably refined. The Burgundian DNA is unmistakable. Drink now with air, or hold for several years.

"The zinc-yellow 2023 Malterdingen Chardonnay Alte Reben opens with a deep, warm, intense yet detailed and calcareous nose of ripe lemon fruits intermingled with flint stone and leafy nuances. Full-bodied, very elegant and remarkably refined as well as mineral on the palate, this is a dense, fresh, very complex and vital, lemon-scented and nervously mineral or calcareous Chardonnay with mouth-tickling grip and delicate tension. It's not dramatic yet playful, which is an art in itself in a warm vintage such as 2023. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2025." —Stephan Reinhardt

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with lemon and herbs, seared scallops with brown butter, grilled sole, mushroom risotto, or aged Comte. Has the body for richer dishes, the acidity to cut through cream.

Tasting Profile

Full-bodied yet refined. Ripe lemon, flint stone, leafy herbs, and a calcareous mineral core. Mouth-tickling grip, fresh acidity, lemon-scented length. Burgundian in everything but address.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
