Grand Cru terroir's next-door neighbor, at a fraction of the ambition — and none of the swagger. The vines for this Pinot Noir sit on the plateau above Nuits-St-Georges and Vosne-Romanée, on shallow clay and limestone, an address that gives brightness and cut rather than weight. Amélie Berthaut treats it with the same hands-off approach she gives her premier crus: cold maceration, wild-yeast fermentation in concrete, gentle pump-overs, malolactic in concrete, then ageing in used barrels only. No new oak touches it, which is very much the house creed here — Berthaut distrusts new wood and ages longer than fashion dictates. She built this domaine by bringing her mother's Gerbet vines and her father's Berthaut vines under one roof, and she farms the whole thing organically, with one slope too steep for a tractor worked by horse. For everyday Burgundy with a real sense of place, this is about as honest as it gets.

"The 2024 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits was taken directly from tank and had been fully de-stemmed. This has a fragrant bouquet with crushed strawberry and light red cherry scents that unfold nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins and touches of sour cherry and strawberry. Amélie Berthaut returned to her native Fixin at the top of the Côte de Nuits in 2013 and brought together her mother's and father's family vineyards under one label. The domaine now comprises 13 hectares across the top villages of the Côte de Nuits, including a first-rate premier cru in Vosne-Romanée. Amélie makes wines that are delicate and complex, farming organically and bottling with the kind of precision that speaks of genuine understanding. This is Burgundy kept in the family and made even better for it.

Tasting Profile

Bright red fruit — cherry, cranberry, a little wild strawberry — with earthy, stony undertones from the limestone. Light to medium bodied, fresh acidity, fine and modest tannins. No oak flavor to speak of, so the fruit and minerality come through clean, and the finish is crisp and savory rather than rich.
