From the volcanic slopes of Sonoma's Moon Mountain District, this single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon captures the intense, mineral-driven character of the Maus Vineyard in magnum format. Beta is the project of winemaker Ketan Mody, who cut his teeth at Harlan Estate before purchasing sixty acres on Diamond Mountain and launching his own label in 2011. The Maus Vineyard sits at high elevation on iron-rich volcanic soils, where thick-skinned grapes develop concentrated color and flavor from extended hang time above the fog line. The 2021 vintage—one of the driest on record in Sonoma—produced beautifully balanced fruit with bright acidity and fine-grained tannins despite late-summer heat. Expect dark currant, blackberry, espresso, and tobacco notes with a structured, elegant frame. The magnum format slows aging gracefully, making this an ideal candidate for long-term cellaring.

Ketan Mody founded Beta to explore California fruit at its edge: low alcohol (rarely above 13%), minimal intervention, wild fermentations in massive casks of at least 500 liters. Mody apprenticed at Harlan before striking out to make wines that sell out in 24 hours via mailing list. That's a cult vote of confidence. Beta proves that serious, ambitious winemaking doesn't require cult pricing or self-importance.
