La Val only bottles Gran Añada in years they judge to have "great vintage" character — the wine is tracked through its evolution and the cuvée simply doesn't appear if the year doesn't earn it. It's a selection of the best plots across the estate's own land along the Miño: the high, granitic sites of Taboexa in Condado do Tea, the boulder-and-pebble terraces of Salvaterra, and vineyards near the Atlantic in O Rosal — different ages, different soils, different climates, blended into one Albariño. Fermented on indigenous yeasts and then split between 500- and 600-litre French oak and tank on fine lees, which gives it the structure and breadth most Rías Baixas whites never attempt. 2019 helped: a mild summer meant slow ripening, and the 12 September harvest came in with moderate alcohol and 7 g/l of acidity still intact. La Val has been working this way since 1985, before the Rías Baixas DO even existed, and it remains one of the rare estates here that uses only its own fruit rather than buying from local growers. If your idea of Albariño is a simple seaside aperitif, this is the bottle that rearranges it.

"Tasted blind and then again (non-blind) several times over the course of several days. Licorice cream. Quite silky and restrained, yet with a sense of hidden minerality and tropical richness beneath a pale veil of fresh white basil flowers. A wine that requires time and patience to open up, eventually revealing flavors of wild fennel groves and the yellow gorse blossoms that spread their golden, anise-scented perfume across Galicia. Bitter orange peel and beautiful tension on the finish. Over the days it remained open, it seemed to take on a cheesecake-like richness, displaying lusher fruit—mango cream, passion fruit—and becoming more dramatic and glamorous." —Tamlyn Currin

"A sumptuous nose of frangipane, ripe yellow apple, quince, pear jam, and candied lemon, dusted with toasted almonds and veiled by the faintest hint of gunflint. Creamy, unctuous mouthfeel with a fleshy core of yellow orchard fruit, topped with honey and melting butter. Fleshy minerality lends robustness, freshness, and a saline edge. An interesting tension between nutty fruitiness and an elegant smoky note. It needs time in the glass for all the aromas and flavors to fully blossom. Good aging potential."

Tasting Profile

Bright straw-yellow with green glints. Aromatically generous: ripe white fruit, citrus, white flowers and a savory laurel note, with vanilla and pastry-dough character from the lees over a stony background. Full-bodied for Albariño but the acidity is lively and keeps everything taut, and the finish is long and citrus-driven. Dry.
