Malbec from vines planted in 1915 and 1925 — a century-old fruit source in a category where "old vines" usually means the 1980s. The grapes come from two López family sites, Los Maitenes in Lunlunta (Maipú) and Los Carolinos in Agrelo (Luján de Cuyo), both on shallow, silty-loam alluvial soils in the High Valley of the Mendoza River, where dry summers and cold nights stretch out ripening and keep the aromatics tight. What keeps this from tasting like every other Mendoza Malbec is the cellar: López ages its reds in enormous old French oak casks from Nancy, the traditional vessels of the early 1900s, which season the wine without ever slathering it in vanilla and toast. Fermentation is a straightforward, moderate maceration in stainless steel kept under 25°C, so the fruit arrives clean and unmanipulated. Casona is the most fruit-forward wine in the López range — a nod to the modern from a house that otherwise makes deliberately old-world Argentine reds — and it's a genuinely serious bottle for the money.

Grilled skirt steak with chimichurri, short ribs off the coals, empanadas de carne, lamb with cumin and paprika, or a baked pasta with sausage ragù. It also takes a bit of chile heat in stride.

Tasting Profile

Bright ruby in the glass, with intense red-fruit aromas — cherry and plum — and just a subtle touch of wood behind them. Smooth, almost unctuous tannins rather than grippy ones, and a long finish. Drinking well now, but built to hold for years.
