A juicy, fruit-driven Malbec from old ungrafted vines — and, unusually for the category, one that tastes like it came from the early 1900s rather than a modern cellar. That's because Bodegas López ages its reds the way Mendoza did a century ago: in very large, very old French oak casks from Nancy, from 5 hL up to 35 hL, vessels so big they lend volume and only a whisper of oak rather than the vanilla-and-extract polish so common in Argentine Malbec. Traful itself sees stainless steel fermentation at no more than 25°C and just three months in those Nancy casks, which is exactly the right amount of wood for a wine meant to be drunk young and often. The name comes from Lake Traful in Patagonia, a beloved vacation spot, and it means "union" — fitting for a house now in its fifth generation, founded in 1898 by José Gregorio López Rivas, who left Málaga in 1886 to get away from phylloxera. Old-world sensibility, everyday drinking, remarkable quality for the price.

Tasting Profile

Dry and medium-bodied, with dark plum and blackberry fruit up front and a faint, subtle note of oak spice behind it. Velvety texture, soft tannins, moderate acidity, and a clean fruity finish. Easy to drink and made for pouring now rather than cellaring.
