A Mendoza Malbec that tastes like it was made in 1950, not last year — because in a sense it was. Bodegas López ages its reds the way it did in the early 1900s, in enormous old French oak casks from Nancy running from 5 hL up to 35 hL, vessels so big they season the wine without ever stamping oak on it. The result is the opposite of the modern inky, sweet, high-extract Argentine Malbec: fresher, lighter on its feet, built for the table rather than for a scoring sheet. The Vasco Viejo name is a nod to 'El Vasquito', the first wine José Gregorio López Rivas and his brother Rafael made after renting a scrap of land in Maipú — José having left Málaga in 1886 when phylloxera reached Andalusia. The family is now into its fifth generation, with fourth-generation brothers Carlos and Eduardo running things, and this is about as inexpensive an introduction to a genuine old-school Argentine house as exists.

Tasting Profile

Violet-tinged red in the glass. Aromas of fresh raspberry and plum with a faint vanilla note. Medium-bodied, juicy and fresh, with round, easygoing tannins and good acidity keeping it lively. Medium finish. Soft and velvety — an easy drinker rather than a heavyweight.
